Meet Katie, Cara, and Leslie, a fun-loving trio who met while playing at Volleyball Beach! It’s no surprise as Volleyball Beach has become a one-of-a-kind gathering place for individuals from all walks of life who come together to enjoy the company of others over a shared passion – sand volleyball! How long have the three of you been playing at Volleyball Beach?
We’ve all been playing at Volleyball Beach for the past 10 years or so! We met each other by chance, subbing on each other’s teams – and then playing on various teams together. Our personalities really clicked and now we regularly play together on the same team during the winter months in the dome.
Do you have a favorite season to play?
Each of us plays on various different teams with other friends during the outdoor seasons, but when the dome goes up in the fall, we all play on a team together. There’s nothing like playing on a beautiful spring day, but there’s just something special about the dome! It’s our winter great-escape to get out of the cold, play together, and enjoy ourselves in the dome.
Did you play volleyball before joining a league?
Some of our team had played in high school, some had played competitively – and some had never played at all! The great thing about Volleyball Beach is that it’s a place for all skill levels. Whether you’re just wanting to have fun or you want to work on improving your game, you can definitely find the perfect team to help you do either one at the Beach.
Do you get together beyond playing in leagues at Volleyball Beach?
Yes! Our group of friends from the Beach do everything from playing in weekend tournaments to having brunch, celebrating birthdays, and even helping each other move!
Does your team have any fun traditions?
Definitely! One day after finishing our match in the dome our team randomly took a funny group photo together. And that started a tradition of getting a funny photo each night – doing some kind of stunt! Now we have years of hilarious photos together! (Scroll to the bottom of the page to see a few favorites!)
What is your favorite thing about Volleyball Beach?
Katie: I would say the people. I have met my closest friends at Volleyball Beach. All three of us even met our significant others here. I have been to the weddings of people I’ve met here. This community is truly like a family.
Cara: Volleyball Beach is such an accepting place. Everyone is accepted here. There is friendly competition, but everyone is here to have a good time. When you’re here, everyone is on the same vibe, just looking to have fun.
Leslie: When you come to Volleyball Beach, you’ll have a whole new group of friends here before you know it. That’s just how everyone here is.
What advice would you give to anyone who has been considering joining a league?
Katie: Just go up to the volleyball desk, or even one of the bartenders, and let them know you’re new and they’ll help get you started!
Cara: Stop by and have a drink out on the party deck! Everyone sees the same people each week, so when someone new comes in, people are quick to introduce themselves. Before you know it, you’ll be invited out on the court!
Leslie: Subbing on teams is the fastest way to meet new people and find a team you want to play on!
