If you’re a regular player at Volleyball Beach, you’ve most likely met or even played on the courts with Bartender and Facility Director Katie Newton. Whether she’s mixing up delicious drinks at the Beach Bar or managing details for the many fantastic tournaments at Volleyball Beach, most everyone recognizes Katie’s friendly and familiar face! Learn a little more about Katie in the interview below:
How long have you been playing Volleyball?
I’ve been playing since I was 11! I played volleyball in high school, in club and in college, too!
How did you find yourself at VBB?
I actually nannied Howard’s kids for three or four years. Howard is the best boss; he’s so accommodating and genuinely cares for all his employees. When I was 17, I played a tournament here at Volleyball Beach… and now I’ve been working here for 8 years!
What’s your favorite thing about VBB?
The atmosphere is really welcoming; it’s a very relaxed and casual environment. My favorite thing is definitely the people I work with; working at Volleyball Beach is like going in to see all of your friends!
What is your favorite drink at Volleyball Beach?
Usually water, actually – staying hydrated is pretty important out here!
What are your hobbies outside of volleyball?
I coach a volleyball club team – all under 18. You can usually find me bartending at Volleyball Beach and, when I’m not bartending or organizing tournaments, I’m probably recruiting.
What advice do you have for those new to Volleyball Beach?
A lot of people ask what to do if they’re new to volleyball or if they maybe haven’t played in a while; I love getting to welcome new people!
Don’t be nervous! If you don’t have a team, you should just sign up anyway. No matter what team you get on – or even if you’re subbing, everyone is encouraging and will treat you like family.
Just sign up – it will be fine! Trust me, there is a team of people just like you that want you to be on their team.
Thanks again to Katie for sharing a little about her life at Volleyball Beach! Now that you have gotten to know Katie a little better, be sure to say hi when you see her!
